Curriculum Overview

At Tiverton High School we have worked hard to ensure that our curriculum reflects the recent changes to the new GCSE Specifications and Performance measures whilst still enabling students to choose from a wide range of subject areas.

We believe that our students should be able to follow a range of subjects to suit their interests and abilities and make sure that students are able to choose from a wide range of Performing Arts and Design subjects as well as the more traditional  ‘Ebacc’ based subjects such as the Sciences, Modern Foreign Languages, Computer Science and the Humanities.

In years seven and eight all students follow a broad curriculum which aims to give them a sound foundation in a wide range of subjects. At the end of Year 8 students are allowed to begin personalising their curriculum. Whilst every student continues with a core curriculum of English, maths, science, a Modern Foreign Language and Religious and Philosophical Studies (RPS) they are also able to begin specialising within the Humanities, Performing Arts and Design, and Computer Science.

By the end of Year 9 students make their final choices about which qualifications they will take through to final examination at the end of Year 11. Alongside these qualifications all students have two ‘Core PE’ lessons each week which focus on instilling a healthy and active lifestyle. In addition, throughout the year we have five ‘Development Days’. These days are designed to deliver aspects of a curriculum which are more suited to specialist delivery such as financial management, careers advice and guidance and a range of Personal Social and Emotional issues. Finally, Outdoor Education forms an important element in developing the characteristics and personal traits we wish to develop in all our young people.
