Best ever GCSE results for Tiverton High School

August 24, 2017, Tiverton, Devon – Tiverton High School Year 11 students opening their GCSE results were celebrating this morning (Thurs 24th), with record results achieved in English & maths.

The school reported that for  English and maths, 65% of students received grades 4-9, a good pass, equivalent to the old A-C grades. 40% of students received grades 5-9, with 5 equalling a strong pass. The A-C equivalent result is a 10% increase on last year, which represents our best ever results. This is a huge achievement in light of the changes to GCSEs that came into effect this year for English and maths.

A national focus has been on the new grade 9, a result that Ofqual stated was being used to identify the very brightest students. Overall, 15 Tiverton High School students achieved one or more grade 9’s, putting them in the top 3% of GCSE students nationally.

Sammy Crook, Tiverton High School Headteacher, said: “There has been a lot of anxiety across schools this year in light of the changes to GCSEs. The specifications have changed to be significantly more challenging, and the new grading system is much more rigorous than in previous years.

“Despite this, we are incredibly pleased to share some fantastic results, not just across English and maths, but across many subjects. Triple science, German and statistics all had over 85% A-C grade results, which shows the hard work put in by all the students and the staff here.

“We are very proud of our Year 11s and wish them all the very best in their futures.”

This is the first year that the new GCSE grading system was used, affecting English literature, English language and maths. Students are graded from numbers 9-1, with a grade 4 equalling the bottom of a current C. The new system will be rolled out across most GCSEs from next year.
