Students win the reading race!

THS students win the reading race

Students in Year 7 have beaten a challenge set to them at the start of the year – to read between 100 and 1000 pages before the end of the first term.

The year group were set the ‘Hundreds and Thousands’ challenge on their first day at the high school, with 93% of students completing the target. 32% excelled the challenge by reading over 2000 pages – approximately 10 children’s novels each over 4 months. In total, the year group read 319,779 pages.

Literacy is an issue nationally, with many students not reaching the expected national standard in reading by the time they reach secondary school. Tiverton High School set the reading challenge for Year 7s, hoping to not only combat these issues, but also encourage the students to enjoy reading in their free time.

Lara Osborne, Assistant Subject Leader for English at Tiverton High School led the challenge, and is delighted with the outcome: “Our Year 7 students really jumped on this challenge, with most of the year group actively enjoying reading their books and filling out their personal reading journey logs.

“It’s really important that we encourage children to read, and that extends to all ages. During the Year 7s challenge, we saw a 20% rise in students from across the school borrowing books from the library. A brilliant result from Year 7 for completing their reading target, and to the rest of the school for joining in!”
