Last Monday, Mr Puzey proudly accepted the invitation to The Queens Club Tennis Championships to receive an award on behalf of THS. The school had been named as the winner of ‘School of the Year’ for the South and South West.
One of the oldest tournaments in the world, ‘Queens’ has been running since 1890, it has been traditionally used by the best tennis players in the world as preparation for Wimbledon.
Earlier in the year, we had news of being awarded ‘School of the Year’ by the Devon LTA – a huge achievement in itself. As a result of this, our nomination was put forward to the LTA as a contender for ‘School of the Year’ for the South and South West. Covering an area from Cornwall to the Isle of White, it was an achievement to even be considered for this award.
The presentation ceremony for this took place in the Press Conference room at Queens, before play, and all winners in each category had some congratulatory words from the President of Queens Club, Jamie Murray.
To top the day off, all winners were presented to the Centre Court crowd between games, where Tiverton High School were announced as School of The Year.
An unbelievable achievement for the school and everyone involved, considering just over two years ago, we didn’t even have tennis courts on school site!
A huge thank you to all students who have been involved in tennis at THS, either by coming to after school clubs, representing the school in fixtures or by being a Tennis Leader in our Primary School Events.
Also, a huge thank you to Iain Winstanley (pictured) and Bounce Back Tennis, who without his support and excellent partnership, this would not have been possible. With Iain’s support, THS has been able to offer tennis almost all year round in school time and run inter and intra competitions. We have also been able to have access to equipment, including the nets, that otherwise we would not have been able to. Partnerships, like these, really do enable our students to have access to the best opportunities.
