British Science Week 2025 had the theme of ‘Change and Adapt’. Our Year 7s and 8s took part in a range of activities throughout the week in their science lessons which got them thinking about animal adaptations and utilising renewable energy resources.
Year 7 spent their lessons examining how animals are adapted to their environment, focusing on how camouflage works. They were then tasked with camouflaging a butterfly within their classroom. Rugile K, Bethany W, Theo T, and Lianna S made exceptional butterflies for which they received a prize in their assembly on Friday. In another activity, Year 7 had to apply their knowledge about static electricity to how geckos stick to walls. Each team had their own ‘gecko foot’ (a balloon) they would stick it to the whiteboard in their classroom. The team that managed to get theirs to stick for the longest was Eva B, Martha L, and Mileja Z with a very impressive time of 1 hour and 47 minutes! The final activity completed by Year 7 was to either design their own creature that was adapted to a set of criteria, or create a poem/extended piece of writing about an animal of their choice. The best pieces of work will be put on display in the science corridor, so come and have a look in the next couple of weeks.
Year 8 took a different approach to the theme and spent their lessons looking into changing energy resources. Throughout the week, they developed their understanding of renewable and non-renewable energy resources before designing and building their own wind turbines. Each group had limited resources and had to carefully plan how they were going to get their wind turbine to rotate and lift an object off the table. Over 2 lessons students built and tested their designs, quickly realising that this task was not as simple as it first seemed. Through careful testing and redesigning, our students produced incredible turbines, most of which rotated and lifted the mass from the table. The most successful turbine across the whole year group was created by Jacob D, Edward P, and Charlie R, well done on your excellent turbine.
An additional activity that was open to all year groups and ran throughout the week was the Element Scavenger Hunt. Each member of science staff had a badge pinned to their lanyard with clues to the name of an element. Students needed to solve the clues and name as many of the elements as they could. Lots of students entered and many were close to having all of their elements correct, however only four students got 100%, well done Jameela W, Lily S, Jessica P, and Ewan B.
Amazing job by all of the students and staff involved, we can’t wait for British Science Week 2026!
