This week both our U13 & U14 boys football teams competed against Uffculme in the first round of the national cup, but unfortunately both teams fell just short losing 3-2. Thanks to Kit B/Job G and Oli Symons for helping with these two fixtures. Apologies for the lack of an U14 photo, a last minute winner from Uffculme put me all off kilter.
The U13s made a strong start and looked like it was set to pay off, but the visitors managed to hold strong and keep out our early surge before scoring directly from a precise corner and getting a second on the counter. THS hit straight back with a long-range effort from captain Callum H brought the score back to 2-1. Frustratingly for us a third was added just before half time to add to the visitors lead.
The boys put in a superb second half performance which saw three near misses rewarded with another Callum strike to bring the score to 3-2. The dominance continued and led to more near chances before a change from Uffculme to 5 at the back with their captain sitting deeper which was a smart move and although our possession continued limited our chances on goal. Liam hit the cross bar with a superb effort from range and JJ’s continued impressive play down the right continued to cause problems, but the equaliser didn’t come in time.
A very impressive second half display that the boys should be proud of and one that will stand them in good stead as the year goes on. Players player of the match today was Callum H and coaches was Jayden T, both of which were superb in the middle of the park.
The U14s now have a bit of a nemesis in the form of Uffculme who seem to just seem to always get the better of them over the past few years. Monday was no different, Uffculme had the better of the exchanges in the first half and credit to THS for sticking in there and keeping the game within reach at half time. Further credit must go to them for their second half performance which was superb; resilient, hardworking & committed across the pitch. Through goals from Archie & McKenzie the game was level in the latter stages and looked like we were the favourites to win it. Unfortunately a mix up at the back allowed Uffculme to pinch the winner with little to no time to get an equaliser. Players player was Charlie G who was excellent in goal considering it was his first time playing there for school.
