Year 10 MAT Academic Insights Day

Fourteen year 10 MAT (More Able and Talented) students visited Exeter College for the Academic Insights Day today. Students listened to speakers talk about A-levels and International Baccalaureate, what to expect from their college experience, course choices, progression, statistics and success rates, extra-curricular activities as well as university choices.

We were greeted and supported through the day by helpful college staff from the College Advice Team – some of them ex-students of Tiverton High School. Students listened to inspirational speakers from Exeter College and Exeter University, including Exeter College student, Ved, who spoke about The Reach Academy and who has just been accepted to Cambridge University! Students also took part in an orientation activity where they had to explore the Centre for the Creative Industries and find answers to a quiz. They then watched a lively debate from the Debate Society. The proposed statement was ‘The House believes humanity should fear advances in artificial intelligence’. Speakers on both sides put forward their arguments for and against AI, debating its effect on human labour, social impact and threat to life. THS’s Nellie was on the judging panel of 6, charged with deciding who made the best argument. It was a very thought-provoking debate, by some passionate speakers! The team against AI won 4-2.

Students had a great day and were given plenty of food for thought about their future progression from THS and what exciting opportunities await them.
