Letter to parents – Strike plans

29th June 2023

Dear parents and carers

Strike Action, Wednesday 5th July and Friday 7th July 2023

As you are probably aware the National Education Union (NEU)  have recently announced two further days of strikes which will take place on Wednesday 5th & Friday 7th July 2023.

Guidance from the NEU to their members state that colleagues do not have to notify school leaders of their intention to strike (or not). Therefore, any plans to open the school for specific year groups has to be based on appropriate health and safety considerations.

Unfortunately this means that we will only be able to accommodate year 10 on both days. All year 10 students should arrive in school at 8:25am to take part in Progression week activities. There are two activities – Discovery day at Exeter College and Progression Day – which fall on strike days and a separate letter will be sent to year 10 parents outlining the arrangements for year 10 on these days.

The provision that will be available for students in years 7, 8 and 9 is detailed below.

Vulnerable and key worker students

Please complete the booking form HERE to ensure a place for your child. They will be supported in their learning by colleagues and will receive a blend of live and independent learning tasks. They should arrive in school no later than 8:55am.

Students in years 7-9 will be working from home.

Teachers who are not striking have been asked to prepare lessons that contain a blend of live teaching and independent tasks. For your child to benefit from these lessons please ensure that they log into Google classrooms at the start of each lesson beginning with lesson 1 at 9am. Please ask your child to follow their normal timetable for week A.

If your child has a lesson where their teacher is on strike, a range of independent tasks can be completed. Please click the link below where you will find information on independent learning available to students.

Arrangements for students working remotely at home – Tiverton High School

The refectory will be open as normal for those students on school site and the school day will finish as normal at 3pm.

We are grateful for your support and sorry for the effect that this strike action is having on families and our students. We very much hope that this most recent period of disruption is the last, and that an agreement is reached soon. If however, there are further strikes planned for the Autumn term we will need to give some priority to other year groups alongside year 11.

Yours sincerely
