Paralympian to mentor Tiverton students as part of mental and physical wellness schemes

Students at Tiverton High School will benefit from two new schemes being launched by the school to help promote mental wellbeing and positive mental health habits – with mentoring from top-flight Paralympian, David Hill.

The first of the schemes, ‘Tiverton Take 5’, will see THS students participating in ‘daily focus’ activities during their tutor group sessions to develop positive mental health, with different themes for each day of the week. Mindful breathing exercises and self-care activities will focus students’ minds and promote better personal mental wellness.

The scheme will be complemented by the ‘Active in Mind’ project – a student-led intervention designed to make use of physical activity as a proactive solution to mental health and wellbeing issues. THS is one of 25 schools that have been selected by the Youth Sport Trust to run the scheme this year. The six-week
intervention to create a ‘nurture group’ environment for those most in need of support, using sport and physical activity as the vehicle for change, will be planned and delivered by six ‘Young Mental Health Champions’ (pictured, L-R):

    • Joe Varndell
    • Ollie Cherry
    • Harvey Short
    • Esther Norton
    • Gracie Musgrove
    • Emily Snow

The students will receive support from athlete mentor David Hill, Paralympian in swimming and triathlon, British champion and both world and European medallist, as well as a dedicated lead member of staff. They will give pastoral support to all students involved and help the young mental health champions with their delivery of the scheme.

Nicola Lane, Assistant Head of student wellbeing at Tiverton High School, said: “We are delighted to be launching the Tiverton Take Five and Active in Mind projects. It’s of vital importance that we support our students with their mental health and do all that we can to promote better mental wellbeing for all.

“These projects will help to increase student awareness of mental health issues and improve physical activity levels, as well as teaching them to build a developed skill-set for improving coping strategies associated with mental wellbeing.”
