School closure November 2nd 2023

This letter has been sent to parents/carers today.

Dear parents and carers

Re: School Closure, November 2nd 2023 due to Amber weather warning

This afternoon Devon County Council wrote to all school leaders to advise them that the Amber Weather Warning presents a risk to life and it may increase to a Red warning overnight.

The combination of wind, rain and the storm moving over warm sea waters increases the risk of very high wind speeds, flooding and trees falling.

Devon County Council called an emergency strategy meeting today and have taken the decision to ask all staff where possible to work from home. They have asked all schools to consider the high level of risk presented by this storm and make a decision today about their operations tomorrow.

As a result this, I have taken the necessary decision to close the school for the day tomorrow, Thursday 2nd November 2023 and am aware that other schools in the local area have made the same decision.

Given the nature of the weather I cannot guarantee live lessons will take place as staff may be without internet and power. Equally, families may be in a similar position and therefore staff will load independent work onto Google classrooms today and we would encourage students to download as much of this work as possible tonight and ensure that their remote devices are charged in readiness for tomorrow.

We ask that students do what they can tomorrow in terms of completing work, revision for mock exams etc. Students can use their knowledge organisers as a tool to support this.

I will be back in contact towards the end of the day tomorrow (Thursday) to confirm our intended plans to open fully on Friday 3rd November. Thank you in anticipation of your support during this period of severe weather.

I hope all families remain safe and well during the next 24 hours.

Yours sincerely
