Year 9 rugby team return victorious from Clyst Vale

The year 9s returned from Clyst Vale as winners on Wednesday after a hard-fought game.

The boys travelled down to Clyst Vale to play against a full strength year 9 team. The boys knew they would be in for a battle, but they were willing to step up to the challenge.

After receiving the ball from kick off, the boys moved the ball well into space and made good gains from some strong runs within our forwards. After going through some phases, Joe P made a powerful break through the opposition defence and offloaded to Toby P to dot the ball down. Clyst Vale soon answered back with a try of their own resulting from a few missed tackles.

The boys stayed positive and put in an amazing charge down on the conversion in front of the posts to keep the scores level. However, Clyst Vale soon doubled their tally with some well worked passes but luckily missed the opportunity to add the extra two after the kick. The momentum was definitely with Clyst Vale, and they were continuing to pile on the pressure by giving it to one of their big loose forwards to break the line. Luckily our full back Bernie M put in a spectacular try saving tackle but unfortunately saw the last of his rugby for the day as he had to be taken off due to injury.

The boys had to soldier on for the rest of the game with 14 men and just before half time we managed to get one try back for ourselves and that saw the boys move the ball well across the line and beating the defence around the outside. Our speedy winger Reuben T managed to put the ball down 15 meters in from the right-hand side. This saw a tricky kick for Finn P but managed to add the extra 2 points that saw us go into halftime with a 12-10 lead.

After a quick team talk and a change of ends, the boys started the second half how they finished the first with a quick try from skipper Joe P, and extras were added again by Finn. The boys continued to keep their foot on the gas and scored another. Another one from Toby P by being in right place at the right time gathering a lovely offload near the line from Ashley M.

The boys saw the rest of the game in their own half and having to put in some valiant tackles to keep the Clyst Vale attack at bay. Unfortunately their perseverance paid off and made most of the extra man and they scored a try in the corner in the last play of the game. Final score 24-15.

Every man played their part and did amazing!
